Fall has arrived and before we know it November and Nanowrimo will be knocking on our doors. But before that it’s time to do a bit of prepping to get everything in order and get excited for what’s to come.
I’ll start this preptober with the lifelong debate between panting or plotting your story. Are you an avid plotter who plan out your story in every detail before the first of November. Or are you a pantser and open an empty document on the first of November and just write what comes to you in the moment?
Over the years I’ve tried both paths. For the first 4 years I was pretty much a pantser with not much else than an idea and it worked out great for me. I had a lot of fun those years and the stories came relatively easy for me.
My 5th year I had about a sentence plotted out for the first 10 chapters before I started and as I continued writing throughout the November I kept plotting about a that much for every new chapter I wrote. It was a great year and that method worked really well for me because there was never any questions about what I was going to write or where the story was going but the excitement of mostly being in the dark was still a major part of the writing process.
For the last two years I’ve been plotting pretty hard in comparison from my previous years and having tried it I can say it’s not something for me. My biggest problem with plotting is that the excitement disappeared and the fact that nothing unexpected happened kind of killed my mojo. But I know a lot of people are avid plotters and it’s great that people work differently. What works for me might not work for you and we can only find the right tactic for us by trail and error.
For this year, I’m going back to panting. I still haven’t picked an idea and I probably won’t until a couple of days before November. Right now I have 6 ideas I’m choosing between and at the most I have plotted out a few bullet points on some of the characters.
No matter of you’re a pantser or a plotter, I hope your preptober is going great. That it’s raising you energy and excitement levels to the roof as November gets closer.
